Is there a technique to letting the pet aggro without them going for you, or am I using the pet incorrectly?

Selecting a target and then pressing the "fight" button should work I think.

Be just outside aggro range (Longbow/Flatbow range) and select a monster to target. Select a pet skill for your pet to use on that target, and click the "Lock" button to make the pet attack that target. If that doesn't work, reset your controls to the default, as you must have changed them for that not to work.

It does to an extent. But almost every time, at least one foe will break aggro and go for me.

Monsters do not attack the first thing they see. As soon as they see ANYTHING they will attack, they do a quick check to find the best target for them to attack. Generally this is based on armor and health of the targets they can find. So as soon as the first thing enters their aggro range, they will look behind it to see if there is something easier to kill. Chances are, you have less health or lower armor then your pet. Although armor isn't something you can see, health is. And monsters can change targets based on various things like damage they take, AoE, or death of their targets, etc.
You won't be able to have your pet take all aggro and hold it, only another player can do that if they know how, and the team they are with knows how. Even that doesn't mean they will hold aggro 100% of the time.

I also find pinging the target when out of aggro range and not attacking him, with the pet locked on, will send the pet around.
I use it against duncan where a corpse is needed near the bugger in order for the sigs to take effect.
